B: Beer

Note: I am sacrificing my Insecure Writer's Support Group post this month for the Blogging From A to Z Challenge.  Yes, I could have easily have incorporated both.  Truth is I kinda forgot when I created this post originally and added this note the night before.  I'll be back on IWSG in May.

I've mentioned a few.... several dozen times my affinity of beer.  I'm by no means a beer snob; I have just as much appreciation for el cheapo "light" beers as I do Pacifico, Smithwick's, and the holiest of holies, Guinness.

This exact sign is in my kitchen.  For reals.

To a degree, beer has been around me my entire life.  And not by me ingesting it (good lord, I'm not that bad).  Growing up in an Irish-Polish family in Chicago, between being drunk, we had our stupid moments as well.  Sometimes together.  Watching the Bears on TV, 4th of July barbecues, Christmas morning (yes, morning), it was always there.  "Oh my god that's a terrible thing!  Being a child around drunks!"

No, it was never anything like that.  Drinking responsibility did occur in my family, even if there were a few bumps in the road; my mother had 2 DUIs before I was 13 years old, my grandfather hit his rock bottom and has now been sober for over 15 years, I goofed in college and had to sit out a week of marching band which was ABSOLUTELY TRAUMATIZING!  WE PLAYED BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY THAT GAME!

..... I share that with you as I enjoy a Stella Artois.  Shush, you.

  1. I drink beer only occasionally. I never quite acquired the taste for it and usually I only drink it in swift gulps to get over the first horrible moments of being in a social situation, or reach for it when I'm already well past sober on something else. :P

  2. I don't drink much. Never have. To me, I would chose a mixed drink or a glass of wine over beer though. :P

  3. I live with N J, and I don't drink... at all, haha. Except when I have to for social obligations in Japan.... so, then I drink beer, and I have to pretty much force it down. But I love the sign! :)

  4. Hah! We don't drink. Never have. I wonder sometimes at all the different aspects of life that's kept us away from--like DUI's, drunk dialing, embarrassing videos on youtube...

  5. I'm more of a whiskey girl, but beer will do. Especially Smithwick's and Guinness. We're also Dead Guy Ale fans in my house.

  6. When I was 2-4 years old, my dad worked for Coors in Colorado. My affinity for beer started then. I still remember the smell of begin at the brewery. haha.

  7. Well written, Dara.

I can relate to this post oh so very much. We aren't Irish but yeah, Christmas morning the grown ups added a shot to their coffee. Can you blame them? My brother and I are terrible when we're together. And, on one side of my family, we can always count on one of the brothers (there are a ton) getting too drunk and doing something stupid like eating a live bug. I'm grateful for my camera at that party!

BTW, I didn't do my IWSG either this month. I remembered yesterday. =P

  9. This made me laugh!! I love your sense of humor. And thanks for sharing personal stories as well!

I honestly don't like beer that much... or alcohol in general, really. I do enjoy a nice glass of wine occasionally, but I'm more of a winecooler kind of girl!
